Movement, energy and tension are among the main features characterizing baroque art: strong contrasts of light and shadow emphasize the dramatic effect of paintings, sculptures and architectural works.
In the paintings, frescoes, reliefs and statues there are elements which suggest a projection into the surrounding space, indistinct and infinite, thanks to a careful and perspective volume rendering.
Presence of nature is another key component of baroque art and human figures are often portrayed individually.
The artists of this period were, in fact, very fascinated by the intimate mechanisms of mind and soul's convulse passions, which they tried to portray through physiognomic characteristics of their subjects.
A sense of deep spirituality is present in many works, above all in ecstasy representations, martyrs or miraculous apparitions and especially by the hand of artists from Catholic countries like Italy, Spain and France. Intensity, immediacy and attention to detail make the Baroque one of the most captivating styles for the spectator in the whole western art.
