The word baroque had been used since the XVIII century with a pejorative sense meaning exaggerated and extravagant art and has just lately acquired a positive connotation.
During that period, art was conceived as an answer to Protestantism; indeed, it assumed a very important role spreading conformist ideas to people all over Europe and it was used as a means to lead the people back to Catholicism.
The baroque art is aimed at reaching directly the soul and the feelings of people and in order to do this, it has to be presented in magnificent and monumental shapes, able to marvel and impress thanks to its excess and ostentation.
The proof is that nowadays, the baroque art is among the most esteemed and valued art expressions in the artistic heritage of various European Countries, where more and more tourists are in search of ad hoc routes to discover the marvels of this fascinating cultural movement. | |
